Philip II King of Spain and daughter, Infanta Isabella Clara Eugenia of Spain
The movie Elizabeth the Golden Age started in Spain with Philip, King of Spain. In 1585, Spain was the most powerful empire in the world. Philip, King of Spain was a devout catholic who had plunged Europe into holy war. Only England stands against him, ruled by a protestant Queen Elizabeth I.

In the first scenes of the movie Elizabeth the Golden Age, Philip King of Spain was showing his daughter, Infanta Isabella Clara Eugenia of Spain, how England had sided with the Devil, ruled by the bastard Queen Elizabeth I and that they needed to save England. The Spanish spoke openly of Mary Stuart as Queen of England in waiting. |
England herself was divided among Catholics who also believed in Mary Stuart as their Queen. A large number of people in England were Catholics (about half) and they would love to kill Queen Elizabeth I. While her advisors advised the Queen to take action against the Catholics, Queen Elizabeth I believed that she should not punish the people for their beliefs, only their deeds and she would want to believe that the people of England loved their Queen.
Philip King of Spain started preparing for the war against England.
Mary Queen of Scots
In the meantime, Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned in the Fotheringhay Castle. She always referred to herself and Queen of England. Mary Stuart was next in line to the throne of England so if Queen Elizabeth I died, Mary Stuart would become the Queen of England. Philip King of Spain had been writing Mary Stuart (Mary Queen of Scots) letters giving her hope of becoming Queen of England.
