Elizabeth the Golden Age Review

Sir Francis Walsingham

Sir Francis Walsingham, Queen Elizabeth I 's most trusted advisor, in the beginning of the movie Elizabeth the Golden Age, urged the Virgin Queen Elizabeth I to find a suitor because the people of England were anxious that the Queen would not have an heir. Even Mary Stuart had a son. So, Sir Francis Walsingham suggested that if Queen Elizabeth I were to have an heir then the people of England would no longer torment her with the talk of Mary Stuart. While Sir Francis Walsingham was referring to all the princes that could be the Queen's suitors, Queen Elizabeth the 1st longed for adventure and a man who was  more unconventional, interesting but honest from far, far away.

The war with Spain

With the set up of the story of Elizabeth the Golden Age underway, Philip King of Spain was plotting to attach England, placing Mary Stuart on the English Throne and assassinating Elizabeth whom he called a bastard and a whore.

Spain waited for words from Mary Stuart to begin their plan of attack and to kill Elizabeth. Mary Stuart was let on to believe that she would soon become Queen of England. Jesuit was sent by Philip to ensure that everything went according to plan.

In the mean time, the movie Elizabeth the Golden Age explored the weaker side of Queen Elizabeth I and the relationship between the Queen and Walter Raleigh, a sailor and explorer of the New World whom both the Queen and her favorite lady in waiting, Bess, had fallen for. The feeling that the Queen had towards Walter Raleigh weakened the Queen and affected her decisions to go to war.

Sir Francis Walsingham learned of the Enterprise of England and warned Queen Elizabeth. When Philip learned that Elizabeth I became aware of his plan to attack, he wanted to speed up the attack so England wouldn't have time to prepare. Philip believed that God had abandoned Elizabeth. Philip planed to sail his fleet in a month to attack and take over England. That was in fact not enough time for the Spanish to prepare for everything but Philip believed in God and miracles so much that it did not bother him.

Dr. John Dee

Queen Elizabeth I and Sir Francis Walsingham want to Dr. John Dee to predict the future. Dr. Dee predicted that from the ways the stars align, a kingdom would fall and another great one would rise. Dr. Dee also sensed fear in the Queen. Something had weakened the Queen. Since Dr. Dee was no prophet, he could not see anything in detail.

The first assassination attempt on Queen Elizabeth I

When Mary Stuart gave words to begin the assassination, the first assassination attempt stroke when Queen Elizabeth I was at her prayers. A young man, Ramsey, barged into the church with a gun (that was not loaded) and shot at Queen Elizabeth I. Ramsey did shoot the Queen but she did not die because the gun was not loaded. He was arrested. Queen Elizabeth was unharmed. Mary Stuart was tried for treason.
