When the Queen learned of Philip of Spain 's plan to attack called the Enterprise of England, she panicked and was rude to Mr. Walter Raleigh so he sent a letter to her asking to return to the colony for 2 or even 4 years if Queen Elizabeth I would be so kind to grant him her royal warrant. The Queen flipped and said that he was needed by her side as Captain of her personal guard. The Queen abruptly made him Sir Walter Raleigh instead of letting him go to sea. Sir Walter Raleigh did not want to be a sir because he wanted to be at sea. He was not happy to not be able to leave England.
After that Sir Walter Raleigh was not as friendly to Queen Elizabeth I as before. Around that time, Sir Walter Raleigh and Elizabeth Throckmorton (Bess) also had an affair leaving Bess with child.

After the attack on Queen Elizabeth I, she was distraught because she knew that she needed to order the execution of Mary Stuart, also a queen. Bess knew that Queen Elizabeth was broken down, confused, and distraught so she begged Sir Walter Raleigh to go to see her.

In the movie Elizabeth the Golden Age, Sir Walter Raleigh seemed to love with Queen Elizabeth I and also Elizabeth Throckmorton or Bess. However, he had a child with Bess and ended up marrying her. Sir Walter Raleigh did say to Queen Elizabeth I that he loved her and he even kissed Queen Elizabeth I when she asked him to in the movie Elizabeth the Golden Age.
However, as England was preparing for war, Bess found out that she was pregnant. She wanted Sir Walter Raleigh to forget about her but he wanted them to marry instead. They married that night in secrecy. When Queen Elizabeth I found out, she had Sir Walter Raleigh arrested and locked up. However, as the war began Sir Walter Raleigh was released and he took part in fighting the Spanish and had a big part in winning. He and Elizabeth Throckmorton had a son together.
